Academic Program and Admissions

Outstanding Research

The Department of History and Political Science at Missouri S&T enjoys a long-established reputation for excellence in teaching and research. In the past five years, history and political science faculty have authored over 40 publications and have won 22 outstanding teacher awards. Two of our faculty members hold the rank of "Distinguished Teaching Professor," two have received the "Governor's Award for Outstanding Teaching", one has received the "President's Award for Outstanding Teaching," which is awarded annually to one faculty member in the University of Missouri system and two have received the "Thomas Jefferson Award," which is also awarded annually to one faculty member in the University of Missouri System for distinguished research, teaching and service. Another faculty member has been honored by the Russian Academy of Science for his contributions to the study and understanding of civilization.

Students who elect to specialize in American History will find helpful our Western Historical Manuscripts Collection, located in the Curtis Laws Wilson Library Outstanding Facilities

Career Opportunities

Our graduate students include those who intend to complete a PhD in history and pursue an academic career, public school teachers whose career ladder includes completion of a Master's degree; prospective archivists, museum curators, or who wish to enter fields requiring an historian's expertise.

Financial Assistance

Missouri S&T's History and Political Science Department offers scholarships with a stipend of $1,000 for the school year. Applicants should contact the History Department for more specific information.

Professional Societies

Missouri S&T has an active Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, a national history honorary society in addition to a campus History Club.

Admissions Requirements

In addition to the general admissions requirements, we ask that candidates for the cooperative M. A. program submit applications to both Missouri S&T and UMSL (UMSL's graduate admissions forms are available via the internet). Both departments request that candidates submit, with their applications, a research paper completed on the undergraduate level.
