Degree Information

History Degree Requirements

  • History 1790 – Introduction to History (1 hour, Fall only): Required for all incoming students (first-time college and transfer). All other courses are suggested in the first year.

Introductory History Courses

  • History 1100 – Early Western Civilization
  • History 1200 – Modern Western Civilization
  • History 1300 – American History to 1877
  • History 1310 – American History since 1877
    These courses can be taken in any order over multiple semesters and serve as prerequisites for upper-level history courses. It is recommended to take two of these courses per semester in the first year.

Foreign Language Requirement

  • BA in History (with or without National Security emphasis): Must take at least three semesters of a foreign language, starting in their first year.
  • BA in History with Secondary Education emphasis: No foreign language requirement.

Courses for Secondary Education Emphasis

  • Educ 1040 (2 hours) – Fall Semester
  • Educ 1174 (2 hours) – Fall Semester
    Consult Teacher Education for additional recommended classes.

Courses for National Security Emphasis

  • Pol 1200 – American Government: Should be taken in the first or second semester.

Upper-Level History Courses

  • Upper-level history courses (2000, 3000, or 4000 level) can be taken as soon as prerequisites are met. There is no required sequence; course numbering is based on themes and coverage, not difficulty.

General Education & Transfer Students

  • General education courses are often taken alongside history courses, with options listed in degree audits via JoeSS.
  • Transfer students entering as sophomores should take History 2791 – Historical Research Methods if available that semester.
